Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day

Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day

When it was created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009, Bitcoin had no monetary value. Early adopters of Bitcoin know the story of Pizza with Bitcoin very well. The first exchange with Bitcoin was made 10 years ago on 22 May 2010, when Bitcoin was just emerging.

At a time when it was not fully recognised by anyone and its value was unknown, one person took the first step to shop using Bitcoins. Laszlo Hanyecz wants to shop with Bitcoin. There is no place where Hanyecz can shop with Bitcoin at that time. Hanyecz thinks of the information sharing platform called BitcoinTalk, founded by Satoshi Nakamoto. Hanyecz and users interested in Bitcoin place an advert on the BitcoinTalk forum in order to communicate and exchange ideas among themselves.

Hanyecz made an open offer to everyone in his advertisement titled ‘Pizza for Bitcoins?’ and stated that he would pay 10,000 BTC in exchange for 2 large pizzas. Laszlo Hanyecz's offer is reciprocated. Another BitcoinTalk user from Britain says that he accepts this offer and sends 2 pizzas to the address specified by Laszlo Hanyecz for 10,000 BTC, which is equivalent to a huge fortune today.

Ten years ago today, 10,000 BTC offered for two large-sized pizzas is equivalent to approximately 93 million dollars at the current time. 10,000 BTC is close to $ 200 million at the end of 2017, when the Bitcoin price reached its highest level.

When we compare 2010 with today, 10,000 BTC with the price of that day was equivalent to 41 USD and 64 TL in Turkish Lira. 10,000 BTC of 2010 is almost 630 million TL at today's exchange rate.

This exchange has gone down in world history as ‘the first commercial transaction made with Bitcoin’.

After 2010, 22 May is celebrated every year as ‘Bitcoin Pizza Day’.
